Inspired by her father Leonard Bernstein’s lifelong compulsion to share and teach, Jamie Bernstein is devoted to bringing her own excitement about classical music to today’s youth.
An enthusiastic supporter of El Sistema, Venezuela’s phenomenal youth orchestra program that has brought social transformation to several million disadvantaged children in that country, Jamie documented how this intensive music education program is now bringing positive change into American public schools in the film, Crescendo: The Power of Music (USA, 85 min).
Stanford Thompson, founder and executive director of Philadelphia’s own Play On, Philly! -- the El Sistema-inspired program featured in the film -- joins Jamie for a talk-back about how the power of music can transform communities.
About the film:
This documentary film follows 3 kids (one in Harlem and two in Philadelphia) who are at schools that have embraced El Sistema, the phenomenal youth orchestra program from Venezuela that brings focus, confidence, and a positive trajectory to children living in low income areas. Surprises, heartbreak, and joy come in big doses as we watch these three young people, their dedicated teachers, and the community around them, all responding to the mysterious power of music.
