The Norman E. Alexander Award for Excellence in Jewish Student Writing

High School Students are invited to compete in The Norman Alexander Award for Excellence in Jewish Student Writing by submitting a 500-word essay on: Jewish Contributions to American Music. Examples are: Paula Abdul, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Shlomo Carlebach, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Billy Joel, Lenny Kravitz, Adam Levine, Matisyahu, Bette Midler, Yitzhak Perlman, Pink, Dinah Shore, Simon & Garfunkle, Stephen Sondheim, Barbra Streisand, etc. The winner will receive $500 plus the Alexander Award Medal, and will have his/her essay published in the Jewish Week and on the websites of Fresh Ink for Teens and the Jewish-American Hall of Fame. Essays not exceeding 500 words should be emailed by May 29 to Lily Weinberg at lily@jewishweek.org. Consideration will be given to originality, creativity and writing style. Also indicate why his or her accomplishments are meaningful to you? All entries must include the name of the high school and the grade of the entrant. There is a limit of one entry per student.
