ABOUT THE EVENT
The third biennial Only in America Gala will take place May 22, 2018 at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City during the worldwide celebration of Leonard Bernstein at 100. Beginning with a cocktail hour and followed by dinner and program concurrently, this event will celebrate NMAJH’s original special exhibition, Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music. This evening – featuring a live performance by Broadway veteran and Orange is the New Black star, jazz singer Lea DeLaria as well as remarks from those who knew him best, his children, Jamie, Alexander, and Nina – will honor Leonard Bernstein in a most fitting fashion.
Leonard Bernstein was chosen as one of the original 18 individuals inducted into the Only in America Gallery/Hall of Fame in 2010 and during this worldwide celebration of his life and legacy, NMAJH will take this moment to celebrate him with the fanfare he deserves.
Leonard Bernstein was a passionate, larger-than life personality – a charismatic conductor, devoted educator, and skilled musician who popularized classical music in the concert hall and through the television screen. Less familiar is Leonard Bernstein the thoughtful composer and ambitious social actor, the second-generation American who leveraged his love of learning and teaching, public celebrity, and musical talent to inspire social change.
